As the first openly gay person to serve on the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court and only the third woman to serve on the Court, Justice Baker raises awareness of the 2SLGBTQ+ community within her tribe and throughout Indian Country. Her visibility and active participation in a number of endeavors ensures a voice for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She serves as a member of Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr.’s Domestic Violence Task Force and as an advisor to Cherokee Nation Health Services’ Ending the HIV Epidemic Committee. Justice Baker also serves as an advisor to Indian Health Services and is aiding the Ending the HIV Epidemic Committee in the Northwest Portland (Oregon) Area. The Oklahoma Bar Association awarded Justice Baker with its Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Diversity Award in recognition of her work including an opinion she authored granting full rights of citizenship to Cherokee Freedmen descendants within the tribe, as well as, using gender non-binary language. She was named a 2022 Changemaker by New York University’s Alumni Association. Outside of Indian Country, Justice Baker serves as the University of Tulsa College of Law’s Distinguished Alumna in Residence and a Trustee for Oklahomans for Equality.
