The Scouts

Ann is the first LGBT+ woman in the 112 year history of the UK Scout Movement to be appointed Chair of the Scouts – the largest mixed youth charity in the UK helping young people gain skills for life.  Under her leadership as Chair,  the movement has instigated structural changes resulting in the appointment of Scouting’s first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager and a new UK Commissioner for Inclusion, as well as raising awareness for LGBT+ inclusion. Scouts now participate in Pride events across the UK, make Pride merchandise and materials available to Scouts and promote engagement with LGBT+ issues in the media. This year, Scouts ran the family area at Pride London, putting the LGBT+ community, diversity and inclusion at the heart of the movement’s skills for life programme. Ann is also the first, and to date only, LGBT+ woman to have served as Chair of one of the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) across England. She was Chair of the UK government’s LEP Review implementation group and co-chaired the Prime Minister’s LEP Council. In this role, Ann also chaired the first ever national LEP network event on diversity and inclusion, an initiative to engage more women and LGBT+ people on LEP Boards.

Fabrice Houdart

Co-author of the UN Corporate Standards of Conduct for Business, an LGBT+ corporate social responsibility initiative supported by more than 260 companies across the globe, Fabrice’s primary role as a Human Rights Officer is to promote the human rights of LGBT+ persons globally. Since the publication of the Standards in 2017, Fabrice has held launch events for them across the globe, and has been a speaker at a multitude of events, including SxSW, World Pride, Women’s Forum, the Tribeca Film Festival and the Gay Games. In addition, Fabrice also co-led a campaign for equality in Africa aimed at reducing human rights violations and inequalities experienced by persons of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Outside of his role at the UN, Fabrice sits on the boards of six non-profits: Outright Action International, Housing Works, the Institute of Current World Affairs, the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, Alturi and the KindRED Foundation.

Dinesh Bhugra

As Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chair of the Board at Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust, Dinesh also serves as Chair of the Trust’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. In this role, Dinesh is responsible for developing the Trust’s D&I strategy and also regularly attends meetings of the Trust’s LGBT+ and ethnic minority staff networks, giving them a direct line to the Board through his dual role. Dinesh represents the Trust in a variety of both internal and external speaking engagements, including the facilitation of the inaugural Pride in Medicine day in June 2019 at the Royal Society of Medicine. Dinesh is a frequent speaker both in the UK and internationally on the mental healthcare needs of the LGBT+ community and, while serving as President of the British Medical Association, led on a survey of the mental health and well-being of doctors and medical students.

Chief Communications Officer at LeanIn.Org, Sheryl Sandberg & David Goldberg Family Foundation, Beth takes an active role in amplifying the voices of LGBT+ people and educating businesses and organisations about the challenges faced by LGBT+ persons in the workplace. As an out television journalist in Washington, DC, Beth earned nine Emmy Awards and three Edward R. Murrow Awards for investigative reporting, general assignment reporting and daily news reporting. Beth has served as the co-chair of the LGBTQ Parents and Allies Affinity Group at Georgetown Day School, helping to shape the school’s admissions efforts aimed at LGBT+ parents and students. Beth, also, acts as a mentor to LGBT+ people just entering the workforce.

Gurchaten Sandhu

International Labour Organization

In addition to his role as Programme Officer on Non-Discrimination at the UN’s International Labour Organisation, Gurchaten serves as the President of UN GLOBE, the UN’s LGBT+ staff group. In this role, Gurchaten has been the driving force behind a number of initiatives and developments in LGBT+ inclusion at the UN, including securing entitlements and benefits for LGBT+ staff, reforming ILO staff regulations on personal status and the introduction of gender neutral toilets and launching the UN GLOBE Mentorship Programme. Gurchaten also facilitates and runs a variety of trainings and speeches on equality and inclusion of LGBT+ persons at the UN. Outside of his role at the UN, Gurchaten is a member of the steering committee of the International Family Equality Day NGO, providing technical guidance to the board on discrimination based on family status and parental leave. He has also represented the NGO on a panel on family diversity at the World Pride Human Rights Conference. Gurchaten shares his story with local schools and in the media, spreading awareness and advocacy for LGBT+ issues.

Martin Shanahan

Since becoming CEO of IDA Ireland in 2014, Martin has advanced a diversity and inclusion agenda through the appointment of Executive Sponsors for key pillars of gender, LGBT+, socio-economic status and ability. Martin takes an active approach to his advocacy, attending and leading on as many events and activities as possible. The IDA launched its first LGBT Ally Network in 2018 and, under Martin’s guidance and support, has run a variety of programmes and activities throughout the past year, including a role model event in conversation with the Irish Prime Minister (An Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar in October 2018. Martin has also promoted LGBT+ inclusion externally, having spoken and participated in the World HRD Congress in Mumbai, delivering the keynote address at University College Dublin’s launch of their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, and sits as a judge for the 2019 Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards. In addition to his role at IDA Ireland, Martin is Adjunct Professor at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business.

In addition to his role as Chief Advancement Officer at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Russell serves on the company’s Strategic Planning Committee and co-chairs the Staff Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Russell also serves on the board of directors for OutRight Action International, The Rockwood Leadership Institute and the International Court Council, one of the oldest LGBT+ organisations in the United States.

Lisa Wainwright

Since starting at the Sport and Recreation Alliance (SRA) as Chief Executive in May 2019, Lisa led all of her staff through unconscious bias training and was appointed Chair of the SRA Equality Working Group. Lisa mentors women senior leaders across and outside of her sector and empowers them to drive diversity efforts within their own organisations across gender and LGBT+. Lisa also serves as a Trustee of Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund, and is a speaker and panel member at the IOD East Midlands, Empowering Women Convention – where she speaks about LGBT+ issues. Lisa was also the driving force behind Swim England gaining their Advanced Standard in the Equality Framework for Sport. Lisa acts as an open and authentic role model within the sports sector and empowers women and LGBT+ persons in sport and beyond to drive inclusion alongside her.

Substitute magistrate of the supreme court in criminal matters
Poder Judicial of Costa Rica

In 2018, the resolution of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ordering Costa Rica to adjust its legislation to allow same sex marriage triggered a confrontation between socially conservative and liberal factions within the government. While a socially liberal President was elected, a conservative majority in Congress and Supreme Court led to the proposed appointment of a President of the Court who was deeply homophobic. Jamie Robleto, Substitute Magistrate of the Supreme Court spoke out in Full Court against this appointment, receiving death threats as a result. While the Court was persuaded not to elect the candidate, Robleto continued to suffer direct threats of violence, with Police refusing to help and protect him. As a direct result of his actions in Court, Jaime has been recognised by the governments of several nations as an advocate of human and LGBT+ rights, and received an award from the Igualitos Foundation for his defense of human rights for the benefit of LGBT+ persons.

Alan Gemmell OBE

Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC)

CWEIC, the Commonwealth’s business network, has seen a 30% increase in membership under Alan’s leadership with members from more than 28 Commonwealth countries and territories. Alan was appointed Chief Executive in December 2018 and immediately implemented a full review of company policies and processes, with the Board’s support, to ensure they were fully inclusive of the needs of CWEIC’s diverse employee and member base. Alan ensures that the voices of the LGBT+ community are taken into consideration in CWEIC’s internal and external work. Alan was the recipient of the first Hall of Fame Award in the inaugural Proud Scotland Awards in 2019.

Lee Marshall

In 1989 Lee was one of the co-founders of Stonewall, and the first treasurer of the organisation. Over the years since then, he has served on various bodies, including All Party Parliamentary Groups, and Boards of Trustees to advance equality. He is now the Chair of the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, a charity raising awareness of the long term effects of bullying and aiming to eradicate homophobia in sport. Last year, Lee hosted the very first StandUp Champion awards, honouring those not usually recognised for their work in the field. Lee currently serves as Chief of Staff at the Church of England Pensions Board and, in 2007, was the co-founder of the LGBT network for the Church of England’s administrative centre. Since then, Lee has embedded a variety of activities, programmes and events to make Church House a more inclusive place for LGBT+ persons. Lee has recently been involved as a “critical friend” to a workstream to develop and better integrate diversity and inclusion in the culture of Church House. He is a visible role model to the staff as the only out LGBT Director within Church House. In 2016 He was globally criticised by some within the Church for being someone who advocated full LGBT inclusion. Within the workplace, Lee actively challenges where he sees faith used as a veil to carry out discriminatory behaviour.

Ian Adams

NHS Resolution

Director of Membership and Stakeholder Engagement at NHS Resolution, Ian has also taken on the responsibility to lead the development of the organisation’s first equality, diversity and inclusion strategy. In addition, Ian is a regular contributor to internal newsletters and a frequent speaker at internal and external events, where he raises awareness of LGBT+ issues and inclusion. Outside of NHS Resolution, Ian is the LGBT+ lead member at Westminster City Council and acts as the council’s spokesperson on LGBT+ inclusion in national and local media and events. He is also the sponsor of the council’s LGBT+ employee network, hosting meetings, speaking at events and supporting initiatives and projects run by the network. Ian has also commissioned the founding of a volunteer outreach programme, Soho Angels, providing support to late-night visitors to London’s West End, and has partnered with Stonewall Housing to improve services for homeless LGBT+ persons in Westminster.

Richard Turner

UK Department for International Trade

Working for the UK Department for International Trade at the British Embassy in Washington DC, Richard launched the first LGBT+ staff network in the USA for the department. Since then, the network has grown to cover all British Government offices across the Americas and Caribbean. This work culminated in the first LGBT+ Americas staff conference being held in June of this year. Richard also sits on the Embassy DC Pride Committee and is responsible for organising a variety of LGBT+ events throughout the year, including the Ambassador’s annual Pride Reception. Outside of his internal work, Richard is an active member of the Capital Area LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce and the US LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), advocating for the internationalisation of LGBT+ businesses. Richard works closely with the NGLCC Global Programme to support similar efforts across Latin America, the Caribbean and South Africa. Richard sits on the Board of the Proud Professional Network, focusing on community engagement, philanthropy and professional development of its members.

Carole Anderson

Carole is Head of Strategy and Performance at NHS Golden Jubilee and beyond her role, acts as one of the LGBT+ leads for her NHS Board leading on policy and service developments to improve the workplace for LGBT+ staff and service users, as well as the LGBT+ network co-chair and a Senior Champion for equality, diversity and inclusion. Carole has also developed a coaching programme for Executive and Senior Managers on understanding the experiences of LGBT+ staff and building confidence in leadership on equality issues. Carole engages wider staff through a variety of learning and awareness activities and programmes she has organised, and is a leading voice internally on LGBT+ inclusion. Carole regularly delivers conference talks and training sessions externally as well, including at the Royal College of Nursing and provides advice to colleagues in various Scottish NHS Boards. Carole serves as LGBT Lead on the Rangers Football Club Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, supporting the development of their Everyone Anyone campaign, promoting equality and inclusion in football. She is also a founder member of Rangers FC LGBT+ fans group Ibrox Pride, launched with full club support and promotion in November 2018. Finally, Carole is Chair of Scottish Workplace Networking for LGBT People (SWAN), a charity established to support cross-sector LGBT networking in Scotland.

Dr Neil Bentley-Gockmann OBE

As Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, Neil has embedded diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation, commissioning an external diversity review of operations to develop a new inclusion strategy. Neil was also responsible for WorldSkill’s first ever LGBT+ data capture of the young people the organisation works with, allowing them to better understand both the importance of and how to approach LGBT+ inclusion in all of their activities. Beyond WorldSkills, Neil lead a roundtable discussion in the House of Commons with education partners to disucss the importance of LGBT+ leadership and role models in colleges. Neil acts as a mentor outside of his role, chaired a one-day annual conference on LGBT+ inclusion at work and was awarded an OBE in the 2019 Queen’s New Year’s Honours’ list for services to LGBT+ inclusion.

Since moving into the role of Governor at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust, Pav has wasted no time in supporting NHS trusts across England to enhance LGBT+ inclusion of patients and staff. With a focus on translating equality and diversity strategy into outputs that include setting up LGBT+ staff networks; research to map LGBT+ staff experiences, and delivering communications campaigns and training on LGBT+ inclusion.


The impact of this work has been measured through staff development and practice  as well as improved patient care experience. Pav is Director of Strategy at UK Black Pride which tackles racism and homophobia. He also chaired the UK Parliament's LGBT Rights in the Commonwealth forum, and continues to campaign for the rights of LGBT+ people of faith, and for LGBT+ asylum seeker rights escaping persecution.

Craig Beaumont

Craig is the Director of External Affairs and Advocacy at the Federation of Small Businesses. Craig created a project group of LGBT+ and ally staff to garner greater awareness and advocacy for LGBT+ inclusion, including campaigns across FSB’s c165,000 members. Internally, Craig was responsible for drafting the organisation’s first corporate D&I statement and implemented an HR review to ensure all benefits, policies and language were fit for purpose for LGBT+ employees. Externally, Craig is working with Government on small business roundtables in the wake of its first ever UK-wide LGBT+ survey, and is also working with Stonewall on potential new resources for the 5.6 million-strong small business community to help them with LGBT+ issues for staff and customers. Craig supports FSB’s first lead volunteer member on LGBT+ issues to activate FSB’s network of LGBT+ small business owners.

Ian is the Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust and has this year co-led the establishment of the independent HIV commission, chaired by Dame Inga Beale, to bring an end to new HIV transmission in the UK by 2030. Ian serves as Chair of the board of Ambassadors and Bridge Builders International, an Australia-based charity which campaigns against conversion therapy and is the Chair of the Steering Committee of HIV Prevention England, responsible for the delivery of the national HIV prevention programme. Ian is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars in the UK and globally, and recently gave evidence to the House of Commons Health Select Committee on the future of sexual health services.

Bev and Sarah are directors at eat:Festivals, and self-described Head of Spreadsheets and Head of Sparkle, running their not-for-profit food and drinks festival offering trading opportunities for micro and small businesses and generating in excess of £10m of regional economic impact per annum. This year, they sponsored their nearest Pride march celebration as well as taking part in London Pride. Bev and Sarah also mentor students and were instrumental in the creation and support of an anti-bullying and supportive LGBT+ network at their local school. Bev and Sarah utilise their roles as gay role models in the rural and traditional sector to benefit local communities and raise awareness for LGBT+ issues.

He launched MIB’s first ever D&I Survey that established a baseline we could build from, and it has transformed our approach to diversity and inclusion. He has gone on to launch our Time To Change Pledge, creating an environment of trust and openness around issues of mental health and MIB is now Living Wage accredited. This year, Jordan launched MIB’s first LGBT+ network, Beyond Pride, that culminated in an EVP video that made us proud to work for MIB. Outside of MIB, Jordan is an advisor and qualified executive coach, supporting the development journeys of many well-known LGBT+ executives and celebrities.

Assistant Director at UK Visas and Immigration, Tom sits as an independent panel member on civil service recruitment boards, ensuring selection panels are diverse and an LGBT+ lens is applied to all appointments. Tom also acts as a mentor to junior LGBT+ staff within UK Visas and Immigration and is an active advocate for SPECTRUM, the Home Office LGBT+ staff network. Tom has also served as a committee member on the Law Society’s LGBT+ Lawyers Division and has increased participation from lawyers in pride marches across the UK. Tom also initiated a series of webinars and podcasts for LGBT+ lawyers.

David is Chief People Officer at the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and the first openly gay man to be appointed to the Scheme’s Executive Team. Since assuming his position, David has transformed the Scheme’s approach to D&I, working across both the business and members of the Regulatory Family, which includes among others the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority, to take a collaborative approach to promoting LGBT+ inclusion. David supports STAND Out’s (the LGBT+ network for the Regulatory Family) Pride activities, LGBT+ History Month and raises awareness of LGBT+ issues through both his many speaking engagements and external partnerships. David personally leads on training on LGBT+ inclusion and was recognised this year as the first FT Adviser Diversity in Finance Awards Diversity Champion of the Year. Outside of his role, David works with Positive East, a non-profit supporting those living with HIV, is a founding member of Positive Feast – the annual fundraising gala to support the work of the charity which has raised almost £100K - and is a corporate sponsor and volunteer for the Red Run, the largest World Aids Day event in London.

In addition, Dallas has rolled out policies and processes to ensure LGBT+ persons are recognised within them and introduced a transitioning at work policy. Dallas is a regular speaker at events both internally and externally at the local and national level, advocating for LGBT+ inclusion. Outside of the Royal Trinity Hospice, Dallas co-founded and chairs the London Hospice LGBT Network, organised for the network to march at London Pride, and has provided LGBT+ trainings to hospices across the UK.

As CEO of the ADHD Foundation, the largest user-led charity of its kind in Europe, an NHS provider and consultancy for government and national agencies, Tony has embedded inclusion across all aspects of the Foundation. Tony actively champions local and national charities and community groups through the foundation and its staff, including the LGBT+ charity, the Michael Causer Foundation, Liverpool City Region Pride, anti-racism charity the Anthony Walker Foundation and Sahir House HIV & Aids Charity. Tony states that ‘Diversity is Inclusion’ and is also champion of ‘neurodiversity’- advocating for the 1 in 5 people who have dyslexia, ADHD, Autism & Dyspraxia. Tony supports a number of LGBT+ organisations and networks outside of his role and acts as a mentor to young LGBT+ people, supporting them through school and careers.

Head of Communications for the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, the oldest and largest education trade union in Ireland, David uses his position to ensure that primary schools are safe spaces for LGBT+ workers and pupils alike. David led a variety of Pride related activities for the Union, including the rebranding of the union’s logo, and a campaign elevating the voices of LGBT+ teachers, which garnered national media attention. David actively supports LGBT+ members in promoting inclusion more broadly across the union and its members. David also held the role of Head of Political Engagement for Pride in London from 2013 – 2018 and garnered cross-party support for the event, participating in the first raising of the Pride flag over the Houses of Parliament. David has also hosted pop-up educational workshops in parliament, local councils, and even in the European Parliament.

Craig is the Chief Accountable Officer and Managing Director for NHS Wigan CCG, working tirelessly to promote LGBT+ inclusion in and beyond his role. Craig chaired the Greater Manchester Transhealth & Gender Identity Board, leading the development of a national pilot for GM to support trans health, securing both funding and community support. In addition, Craig has run 1:1 coaching for LGBT+ talent within the NHS, supporting Wigan Pride and rolling out the NHS Rainbow Badge scheme, a visible signal to indicate committed allies. Craig champions LGBT+ inclusion in his role as a Presiding Justice in the Greater Manchester magistrates courts. Craig also sits as Chair of the Survivors Manchester charity, and is a sponsor of Wigan Pride as a local Wigan business owner of an LGBT + Salon

As a Social Enterprise whose focus is on building community capacity to create and hold safe, inclusive spaces and suicide safer communities, Bella ensures that CAWA is at the forefront of inclusion and best practice. All CAWA staff, volunteers and project partners engage in cultural competency training including ongoing up-skilling, in order to meet the diverse and intersectional needs of the LGBT+ community. Bella is the LGBT+ representative on a number of state reference and strategic industry groups and also serves as President of the Western Australian Divisional Council of the Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD). Bella is a regular speaker on diversity and LGBTI+ inclusion, contributor to Out In Perth Magazine, the AITD magazine and a regular guest speaker on radio, covering topics related to mental health and wellbeing as well as LGBT+ inclusion. Bella actively works to increase collaboration and the creation of safe spaces within government, non-profit and corporate sectors through supporting other executive leaders to become best practice allies to the LGBT+ community and to work towards creating cultural change within their organisations. For the past two years, Bella has coordinated the Perth IDAHOBIT event, bringing together local LGBT+ groups to foster collaboration, raise awareness and up-skill local mental health, health services and other organisations to connect with LGBT+ groups and improve their inclusive practice.
